COTUS... (Citizens of the United States...)    2025

After Margaret Forster Steuart’s battle flag, made at the request of Oliver Hazard Perry to be used on his ship, the USS Lawrence, during the Battle of Lake Erie. The phrase on the flag comes from the dying command of Captain James Lawrence, who was wounded aboard the USS Chesapeake. The original flag is displayed in Memorial Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
